(1993) the only thing that can keep a five-year-old kellan quiet for an extended period of time is jurassic park, the first movie he remembers seeing in the theater. in a dark room with a popcorn kernel lodged next to a wiggly tooth, he falls completely and utterly in love with dinosaurs and decides that he wants to be a paleontologist. he hides his mother's things in the sand then forgets where he buried them and gets into a lot of trouble when she can't find her car keys. his favorite christmas present that year is a velociraptor plushie from his cousin ken that he sleeps with every night. to this day, the score gives him goosebumps.
(1993) kellan starts school. he accidentally calls the teacher "mom" and cries the rest of the afternoon. he is a sensitive kid and he is bullied in class for his small stature. he plays catch with his dad whenever they get a chance and when he gets too busy, joe signs kellan up to little league to encourage him to keep playing. his parents encourage him to pursue sport when his little league coach comments on his natural flair for the game. kellan grows tired of baseball by middle school. easily bored, he tries his hand at every sport program available to him.
(1999) he joins the swim team and quickly becomes one of their best contender. he is still small, but he is fast and fearless. he earns countless trophies and awards and travels interstate to attend competitions with his team. they win most of them. his brother starts college to become a doctor. although kellan has the smarts to succeed academically, he doesn't have the attention span, spending more time on the playground than he does doing his homework. his mom sets up a reward system where he can only go to swim meets if he finishes his school work on time. it works and his grades improve.
(2001) joseph (an ex-army doctor) is contrated to an independent government taskforce and the family is uprooted to hawaii. kellan's sister and brother have moved out to pursue their own lives, so kellan and his parents move to oahu. his dad's new salary means his mom can work part time and take kellan to the beach whenever he wants. when the school year begins, he tries out for the swim team and becomes their star athlete. later that year, he has a massive growth spurt, going from 5"1 to 6"4. it improves his athleticism and brings him attention from the ladies. he laps it up and learns how to charm the opposite sex a little too well.
(2004) kellan and his girlfriend have a pregnancy scare, but it's a false alarm. it freaks him out and he decides to be celibate. it lasts four months. at a swim meet he is scouted by a coach of team usa who thinks he'd be a good diver. the hunch proves right and kellan enjoys the change of pace and the challenge of learning a new sport. he learns that diving from a height gives him a rush he has never felt before and he gets hooked on the adrenaline.
(2005) kellan joins team usa as part of the men's diving team. he applies for colleges but has no intention of going. still, he gets an offer from umass to study geology and he accepts it because it's far enough away to keep the idea of college out of sight and out of mind. he moves out of home, rents a bungalow by the beach in waikiki and starts working in a boutique hotel to fund his hedonist lifestyle.
(2008) kellan defers college for the third time to go to beijing for the olympics. he doesn't win anything, but he's proud to be a part of it. he makes some of his best friendships there. when it's time to return to oahu, he learns that his parents are moving back to san fransisco and he follows them. he starts a degree in psychology on a whim. he's a lazy student, but finds the coursework easy, graduating with honors.
(2012) kellan wins the olympic gold medal for the men's 10 meter and the olympic bronze for the men's synchronized 10 meter. it is the highlight of his career and his medals are a sure way to get the attention of women. he is a merciless flirt and usually gets what he wants. swimming in a co-ed team, he awakens to feelings for one of his teammates but doesn't say anything. he wonders if there's something wrong with him as he pines from afar for a dude he's known since he was a kid. a dude he believes is 100% straight.
(2014) kellan moves to boston for a girl. he's not exactly in love, but she's hot and she is the first person who has ever managed to keep his attention this long. they are on and off for two years. he comes to the realization that he has serious feelings for her when she decides it's over. he mopes and quits the diving team. he applies for college again. he gets another offer from umass to study geology and this time he takes it.
